I am the son of an English and Welsh father and of a Salvadorian mother. I was born in El Salvador by chance because had I been conceived a month or so later I would have come to the world in Colombia. I have lived in seven different countries in my life. All these countries have formed and shaped the person that I am. I speak four languages pretty much as a native…and I can wangle another two, for now. In the not too distant future I plan to command them as I do the other four. I was mostly educated in the British system and I am proud of my Anglo-Saxon genes. I am equally proud of my latin/hispanic genes that resonate just as strongly within me. I haven’t got a single drop of Portuguese blood in me and yet I love Portugal and its culture as if I was nothing but a native. The truth be told; I think I love Portugal more than any other place in the world and I would gladly become Portuguese if they would have me. Challenge me in French and eventually you will figure out I’m not Gallic….but it will take you a while. Spain has been my home for the last twelve years and I have come to love its colour, its depth and its diversity. My better half is Catalan from the toes up….from countless generations back. I am exposed to the uniqueness of Catalan culture day in and day out. I was once married to a Dominican whose culture I absorbed with relish. I have always loved Italy and so much of what it represents…..I could go on…. My point is that my flesh and bones are the vehicle for a cultural circus of many rings… and I’m proud of that. I would never want to be owned by a single culture. I’d rather that these many cultures let me borrow a bit from each and allow me to construct the edifice within me with countless different facets. I pray to God that we move forward, as humans, with humanity and in a spirit of tolerance and inclusion. The reverse course for us is oblivion.
Bravo, Oli, well said!
Notwithstanding, and according to Theresa May, the parochial and essentially monolingual Prime Minister of the UK, you, Oliver, are a Citizen of the World and thus in reality a Citizen of Nowhere as Maybe would have it! God save us all from the relatively ignorant bigotry of the likes of Theresa Maybe, Donald Trump (plus the English one, Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage), Marine le Pen, Geert Wilders, Beppe Grillo et al. I do not deny that they may have some valid points to make but essentially they are blind to history and interestingly even their own origins. May, née Brasier (don’t sound very anglo-saxon to me, also immigrants/invaders as it happens), Trump, German/Scottish descent with a penchant for immigrant women, Johnson, US/Turkish, Farage, French Huguenots, etc. etc. What a bunch of bigoted twerps. I could go on but right now don’t have time LOL
