On allegiance

For most of my adolescence and much of my adult life I have wasted precious energy searching for a sense of identity to a flag, a tribe, a culture or a purpose, and so on; something that has eluded me artfully, more often than not leading me to dead ends, false leads, rebuttals and in some cases outright rejection from those who’s allegiance I sought.

To have severed consciously with this needless anxiety has been one of the cleverer things I have achieved in my later years and is one of the many things I am presently very grateful for, largely because it has provided me with a handle on the intelectual and spiritual freedom I have always sought.

Saint David of Brixton was so right when asked what he thought about “getting on” a bit:

“Ageing is an extraordinary process whereby you become the persone you always should have been.”

Amen
